Pomp and Circumstance

So today in the sweltering afternoon heat Roxy will don the polyester (wipe with damp cloth only) gown and a mortarboard cap (that no hairdo can withstand,) and go through the motions of graduating (no cell phones or personal belonging - ye will be searched to ensure, no heels least you trample the grass). No diplomas will be handed out onstage, covers only - they will have to stand in a separate line later to receive the diploma. How did we end up with an elaborate and meaningless procedure like this to graduate our kids?

"The academic dress found in most universities in the British Commonwealth and the United

States is derived from that of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, which was a

development of academic and clerical dress common throughout the medieval universities of

Europe," says Wikipedia. "In early medieval times, all students at the universities were

in at least minor orders, and were required to wear... clerical dress, and restricted to

clothes of black or other dark colour."
